Description
The church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Alcocer, province of Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, is a fine example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, unusual for that area of the country. The town, rich in history, is very small with, according to the early 2000's census, a population of only about 300 inhabitants. The church, popularly named the "cathedral" of the Alcarria is not very large but remains one of the most interesting in the Guadalajara province. Construction of the cathedral started during the 2nd half of the XIII century, continuing over the centuries in various stages and styles, including Romanesque, and predominantly Gothic. Alcocer is of Andalus origin. It's name derives from the Arabic al-Qusayr (meaning "small palace"). But remnants of Iberian, Celt-Iberian, and Roman cultures have been found nearby.
