Description
It was in May of 2013 that I came across this sweet statue of Mother Mary and Child Jesus during a visit to San Pere, a Benedictine monastery in Besalú. Obviously in dire need of restoration the image inspired devotion placed on crisp linen bordered by lace, with a bouquet of fresh lilies at the side. The stark simplicity moved me. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any information on the statue itself, background, whether original to the monastery, author, or artistic period.
The Romanesque-style monastery of Saint Peter in Besalu, Catalonia, Spain,
founded in 977 by Count Besalu of Girona, Bonfill Miró, was placed under the patronage of the Holy See of Rome and secured the transfer of the relics of the Saints Primus and Felician. Two years later, Pope Benedict VII granted the privilege to the monastery to choose an abbot. Expansion occurred during the 12th and 13th centuries. The building was renovated in 1160.
