Description
Exterior of the Hermitage of San Segundo in Ávila, Spain (12th-century). Image captured in 2005. Unesco World Heritage Site 348-002, part of "Old Town of Ávila with its Extra-Muros Churches."
Saint Secundus or Secundius (Spanish: San Segundo) is venerated as a Christian missionary and martyr of the 1st century, during the Apostolic Age. He evangelized the town of Abula, which has been identified as either Abla or Ávila, and became its first bishop. The ancient town of Abula is mentioned by Ptolemy in his Geographia as located in the Iberian region of Bastetania. It is said to be one of the first cities in Hispania that was Christianized, specifically by Secundus. Ávila may have been the ancient Obila and Abula may have been the present town of Abla (Wikipedia).
In the Romanesque hermitage of San Segundo, saint patron of the city, pilgrims celebrate the feast day on May 2nd, venerating the saint with the hope that he will grant them one of three wishes. In order to do this, they must introduce a handker-chief, which must be of cloth, in an orifice of the sculpture of the praying saint, work of Juan de Juni, and touch the urn, which according to tradition contained the remains of the patron saint (AvilaTourism). Present-day look of this historical and religious monument is the result of reforms effected after the 16th century. Thank you, Suzanne, I appreciate your visiting! I think you would like Spain and capture its charm beautifully. The world is full of wonderful places so see and photograph. Researching descriptions helps me to learn more about those places visited where, quite often, I didn't have time to explore further.
