Description
Time and obvious need of restoration have taken a toll on this beautiful portico that retains its charm and relevance even with some figures and decorative elements missing. The monastery of Leyre in Navarre, Spain, set in beautiful, pristine surroundings, is a wonderful example of Romanesque art. Historically important is that it is there where the most ancient monarchs of Navarre are buried. The crypt, dating back to the XI century, presents amazing and very well preserved columns; found there is a large, XVI-century carved image of the Christ of Leyre. The offered image is a detail of the XII-century main portico, named "La Porta Speciosa;" entering through that door, one can go back in time to the ancient church, attend Mass and other services, and enjoy the moving Gregorian chants that are sung by the monks daily. All an awesome experience. On a side note: The monastery is also the setting for at least a mystery novel.
