Description
Birthplace and childhood home of St Francis Xavier (Francisco Javier), the castle, Gothic in style, is located on a hill in the town of Javier (Navarra, Spain) east of Pamplona. The saint, born in 1506, was co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and became a universal missionary. The castle, dating back to the X century was destroyed in 1512 and later restored by the Jesuits with extensive alterations, including addition of a Basilica (see left of image). The Xavier Castle complex is a place visited by pilgrims, especially during the first two weekends in March, and it is also a museum.
