Description
By the Ebro river, El Pilar is one of the most important Marian shrines in the catholic world, visited every year by thousands of pilgrims. Local traditions take the history of this basilica to the dawn of Christianity in Spain and an apparition to Saint James the Great, the apostle who is believed by tradition to have brought Christianity to the country. This is the only reported apparition of Mary to have occurred before her believed Assumption. Besides being a jewel of the baroque style, the Basilica of El Pilar is also a leading artistic centre with a collection of valuable works from different periods, in particular the frescos by Goya. In this image, strong sun lights up the basilica causing the towers to gleam.
