Description
Monument in El Retiro park, Madrid, Spain, to authors Serafín and Joaquín Álvarez Quintero, Spanish brothers who collaborated in almost 200 dramas depicting the life, mannerisms, and speech of Andalusia. Both born in the late 1800s in Utrera, Sevilla Spain, they produced work that was extremely popular in Spain during the early 20th century and greatly added to the revival of the Spanish theatre. Their very successful dramas are remarkably vivacious, skillfully presenting Spanish culture and folklore. It is said that, while living in Madrid, the brothers enjoyed walks in El Retiro and the park was chosen for the monument in their honor, dedicated in Avenida Colombia on December 2nd, 1934. The monument clearly references the Andalusian folk, culture and customs of the time that the Alvarez Quintero brothers from Ultrera represented in most of their plays: a horseman and a young woman.
