Tile picture depicting Our Lady and her Son Jesus, with angels and a half moon adorns a narrow passage by the Veger castle. Although, unfortunately, the tiles are severely damaged, the colorful image of Mary, patroness of the town, with Jesus in her arms and angels and moon under her feet, inspires devotion. The town of Vejer de la Frontera in the province of Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain, is a picturesque example of "pueblo blanco" or "white village," so called because of the white-washed houses. Occupying a hill that overlooks the Straight of Gibraltar; in ancient times, the site was location of fortresses used by Phoenicians, Romans, and later followed by Moorish rule that lasted from 711 till captured by Christian King St. Ferdinand of Castille. Vejer's typical houses and streets recall that long Moorish period. A narrow, shadowy street leading to the castle is graced by a tile picture of the Virgin of the Olive, patroness, flanked by typical wrought iron lamps. Dating from the X to X...
