Artist's Description

The ancient Roman colony of Emerita Augusta (present-day Mérida) was founded in 25 BC by Augustus to resettle emeritus soldiers discharged from the Roman army from two veteran legions of the Cantabrian Wars (the Legio V Alaudae and Legio X Gemina) and became the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania. The term emeritus refers to soldiers honorably discharged from service. Construction of the Roman Amphitheater was promoted by the consul Vipsanius Agrippa and completed in 8 BC. It is occasionally used as a venue for live performances even today. The amphitheater is part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, which is one of the largest and most extensive archaeological sites in Spain. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, No. 664, in 1993. This digital image is protected by US and international copyright laws and regulations, not to be copied, altered in any way or form, or used for any purpose without prior consent from the author, Nieves Nitta.
