Description
The iconic 16th-century Sacred Chapel of El Salvador is located in the Plaza Vázquez de Molina or Santa María, iconic setting in Úbeda, with manicured greenery hedges and carved marble fountain frequented by many birds. The Plaza stands out in the middle of Úbeda's whitewashed houses. Prominent in this area is one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture, the Sacred Chapel of El Salvador (16th C). The church layout was designed by Diego de Siloé and built by Andrés de Vandelvira under the orders of Francisco de los Cobos, secretary and confidant to Emperor Carlos I. The Holy Chapel magnificent Plateresque-style main front and doorways are the work of Vandelvira. Preserved inside is the reredos by Alonso de Berruguete and grilles by Maestro Bartolomé. Next to the Chapel is the Palace of Constable Dávalos, nowadays converted into a Parador de Turismo, a 16th-century building altered a century later, that used to be residence of the Dean of the Sacred Chapel of El Salvador lived. Behind its distinguished façade there is a beautiful courtyard with a double gallery of superimposed arches. There are various palaces surrounding the Plaza de Vázquez de Molina such as the Collegiate church of Santa María de los Reales Alcázares, Palace of Dean Ortega, Palace of the Marquis of Mancera, City Hall.
