Partial view of the New Cathedral of Salamanca, Castilla, Spain. UNESCO World Heritage Site No. 381, Salamanca is a historical, university city situated by the river Tormes; it has two cathedrals side-by-side, the New Cathedral (Spanish: Catedral Nueva) and the Old Cathedral. The New Cathedral was constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries in two styles: late Gothic and Baroque. Commissioned by Ferdinand V of Castile, building began in 1513 and the cathedral was consecrated in 1733. It was declared a national monument by royal decree in 1887. This ancient university town north-west of Madrid was first conquered by the Carthaginians in the 3rd century B.C. It then became a Roman settlement before being ruled by the Moors until the 11th century. The university, one of the oldest in Europe, reached its high point during Salamanca's golden age.
