The present Basilica of the Annunciation of Nazareth, built on the site of Byzantine and Crusader churches that were destroyed over the ages, was consecrated in 1969. Its grotto, or cave, where the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary announcing that she would conceive a Son, was identified as early as the 4th century or earlier. Near the grotto, there still are remnants of the ancient churches This image might be the cover of a very meaningful Christmas card.
