Artist's Description
The Hermitage of San Isidro, also known as the Hermitage of San Isidro of the Fields is a shrine located in the Carabanchel district of Madrid, Spain, dedicated to the saint patron of the city, Saint Isidro Labrador (fields laborer) who was canonized in the year 1622. It is located in the paseo of the Ermita del Santo (saint's hermitage), al the end of the Quince de Mayo promenade. Origen of the first hermitage dates back to the year 1528 when empress Isabel de Portugal ordered its construction close to a brook that popular tradition considers miraculous. To this water was atributed the healing of the queen's son, future king Felipe II of Spain. The existing hermitage dates from 1725 or, according to some authors, later decades. (Wikipedia excerpt). The shrine and surrounding area is a popular site for traditional festivals, particularly on May 15h when the feast of the saint patron of the city is celebrated.

About Nieves Nitta
Born in Madrid, Spain, for many years residing in West Texas and loving it. It is a wonderfully beautiful world out there, and soon after starting taking pictures I felt impelled to share those images with friends, family, and beyond, as a way to relive the moments that I had so enjoyed capturing, perhaps even allowing others to see those places, people, art,...

Comment greatly appreciated, Suzanne! Over the years I visited the Basilica of San Isidro el Real, or Collegiate Church of San Isidore the Laborer, a Baroque church in another location in Madrid that holds the remains of the patron saint and his wife Santa MarĂa de la Cabeza, but I took this picture when visiting the small hermitage for the first time a few years ago. Thanks for the L/f!
