Description
The Hermitage of San Isidro, also known as the Hermitage of San Isidro of the Fields is a shrine located in the Carabanchel district of Madrid, Spain, dedicated to the saint patron of the city, Saint Isidro Labrador (fields laborer) who was canonized in the year 1622. It is located in the paseo of the Ermita del Santo (saint's hermitage), al the end of the Quince de Mayo promenade. Origen of the first hermitage dates back to the year 1528 when empress Isabel de Portugal ordered its construction close to a brook that popular tradition considers miraculous. To this water was atributed the healing of the queen's son, future king Felipe II of Spain. The existing hermitage dates from 1725 or, according to some authors, later decades. (Wikipedia excerpt). The shrine and surrounding area is a popular site for traditional festivals, particularly on May 15h when the feast of the saint patron of the city is celebrated.
Another church dedicated to the same saint, the church of San Isidro el Real, also known as the Colegiata or Collegiate Church of San Isidore, is a Baroque church in the centre of Madrid, Spain. It is named after and holds the remains of the patron saint of Madrid, Isidore the Laborer and his wife Santa María de la Cabeza. The temple is due to a design by the architect Pedro Sánchez in 1620. Glad you like this image, Kathi. Being from Madrid I find it difficult to admit that it was not until 2014 that I visited this hermitage built on/about the land where St. Isidore had labored! Thanks for the lovely comment!

Comment greatly appreciated, Suzanne! Over the years I visited the Basilica of San Isidro el Real, or Collegiate Church of San Isidore the Laborer, a Baroque church in another location in Madrid that holds the remains of the patron saint and his wife Santa María de la Cabeza, but I took this picture when visiting the small hermitage for the first time a few years ago. Thanks for the L/f!
