Description
Partial east view of the Madrid Royal Palace (Palacio Real) from the manicured gardens of Plaza de Oriente. Towards the middle of the image, situated on a large pedestal over a very attractive fountain (not seen here), is the monument to Philip IV of Spain (1605–1665). The bronze equestrian statue was made in Florence, Italy, between 1634 and 1640 by Pietro Tacca (1577–1640), who requested Galileo Galilei's advice to achieve its stability: rear part is solid and front is hollow. The statue was initially placed in the Buen Retiro Palace but moved to its present location by order of Queen Isabel II. Plaza de Oriente was inaugurated in 1843. (Paraphrased excerpts from Wikipedia). The plaza is a very popular gathering place.
