Artist's Description

Besalú, in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain, is a monumental example of the Catalan Middle Ages. The origin of the fortified bridge is unknown. In 1075 it is mentioned in documents and the basic structure probably dates from this time. In order to protect the bridge from floods and enemy attacks the bridge had to be modified frequently; first, in 1315, then in 1395 with the incorporation of the defense towers, then in 1680 and, finally, in the 1960s after it was partially blown up in 1939 during the Spanish civil war. Located in the region of La Garrotxa, the town is only steps away from the spectacular scenery of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa Nature Reserve, on the last spurs of the eastern section of the Pyrenees of Girona. Cobbled streets and façades are the most distinguishable feature of the city centre, as can be seen in many spots.
