Description
The granite Cuatro Postes, or Four Posts, with a cross in its center, a much-visited Avila landmark, is a great site from which to admire the most beautiful view of the medieval city. The place is also the site for a moving scene of the classic film El Cid starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren.
Avila, Castilla-Leon, Spain, a World Heritage City (UNESCO World Heritage Site - No 348bis), sheltered by the Sierra de Gredos, is home to many churches and palaces and noted by its medieval wall, one of the best-preserved in Europe. The iconic wall, with a perimeter of 2 and a half kilometers is a symbol of the city. Avila is the birthplace of St. Theresa de Jesus, reformer of the Carmelite order and Doctor of the Church, and Saint John of the Cross. Of Celtiberian origin dating back to 300 BC, the area saw arrival of the Romans in the 3rd century AD. The first wall was started at that time.
