Description
Down in the grotto of the Church of the Nativity, the basilica in Bethlehem, West Bank, Palestine, and marked by a silver star, is the site recognized in constant tradition as the birthplace of Jesus Christ. The church, of Romanesque style architecture, was originally commissioned by Emperor Constantine in 326 AD. After its destruction, the church was rebuilt by Justinian I towards the end of his reign in 565 AD and is continually visited by pilgrims.
