Description
Segovia, Spain, is known world-wide for its history, culture, and magnificent architectural jewels, in particular the famous Roman aqueduct. UNESCO World Heritage Site No. 311. The aqueduct is an excellently preserved civil engineering work from the Roman period, probably erected ca. 50 AD, consisting of an underground channel, with a free-standing arcade comprised of 20.000 granite blocks that are held together without any kind of binding agent or mortar, supplied water to the high-lying part of the town. In this image, a mature gentleman, quite obviously not a tourist, strolls by the Postigo del Consuelo along a walk-way at the southern end of the Aqueduct that can be seen through the opening in the background. It is most likely a route that this gentleman, proud of his heritage, has taken many times before. There are quite a few stairs to climb to reach this point but the effort is worthwhile as it affords wonderful views of the city and, in particular, the aqueduct. In the niche, a statue of the Blessed Mother Mary with the Child Jesus in her arms; words carved on the stone panel to the right read: "Postigo del Consuelo." The Postigo del Consuelo was so named after a hermitage that no that no longer exists.
